Booking User Group Meeting, Training
PTV organizes this event to which you are invited. It pertains mainly to the VISSIM microscopic simulator, but also VISUM and other software for traffic management and control (please visit www.ptv-vision.com to know more).
The current page will be updated as the preparation progresses and will contain up-to-date information on the event. The most important changes to this page will be tagged with the date in the format UPDATE-YYMMDD (YY=year; MM=month; DD=day). At the bottom of this web page (accessible here) there is the list of major updates. It is possible to navigate to hyperlinks from this page and then use the ‘back’ button of your browser to come back. Alternatively, please click on the hyperlinks while pressing the <shift> button to open new web pages.
Prior to the user group meeting parallel training classes will be offered. The number of participants per course will be 5 (minimum) and about 20 (maximum). Staff from PTV-Karlsruhe (Germany), PTV-UK and Faber Maunsell will run the courses, possibly with more than 1 trainer per session. Booking will be done on a first come first served basis although it is a possibility that a course will be split into 2. Indicative topics for the training are:
a) VISSIM ‘beginners’ training: basic network modeling, priorities, link-based flows, fixed time signals, public transport, evaluations (delays, queues, travel times, etc.). Trainers: Andy McGregor (Faber Maunsell).
b) VISSIM ‘advanced’ training: experts’ problems, emphasis on vehicle actuated signals (VAP/VISVAP), dynamic assignment, COM interface, modeling suggestions, V3DM (to generate 3D models for VISSIM). Trainers: Sergio Grosso (PTV-UK), Sara Rollason (Faber Maunsell). (UPDATE-050412): This course is now full.
c) VISUM 9.2 ‘beginners’ training: Introduction to this versatile software for transport planning, encompassing private and public transport. This includes: VISUM network editing; introduction to various assignment methods; post-assignment analysis; junction modeling with delay calculation using Trafix; interface with VISSIM. More on VISUM can be found by clicking here. Trainer: Dr. Martin Fellendorf, PTV Karlsruhe.
d) VISUM 9.2 ‘advanced’ training (UPDATE-050320): Advanced modeling issues, public transport (to include rail) networks and existing standards, GIS functionality. Trainers: Karsten McFarland and Thomas Friderich, PTV Karlsruhe.
Participants will need to bring their own laptops (basic specifications can be found here), though no VISSIM/VISUM licence is required. To cover costs, the charge is £ 160 for the Training (£ 100 for students, including PHDs). It must be pointed out that both the ‘beginners’ and ‘advanced’ courses were full last year and we had to regrettably turn down applications so please apply sooner rather than later if you wish to attend. We have something new this year which is inviting applications from experienced users to contribute to the training: 1 or possibly 2 among those applying before March 4th will be chosen at random to help us out with beginners and advanced VISSIM training. Those chosen will not be charged for the User Group Meeting on the following day.
The 5th UK VISSIM User Group Meeting
will be held at Imperial College London on
We calculate that to cover the costs of the User Group Meeting, which
include lunch, refreshments and documentation, a fee of £ 160 will be required
(£ 80 for students and presenters). The maximum number of participants is set
to 90.
Presentations are invited from a variety of working backgrounds, be
they consultancies, public sector or University. If you have applied VISSIM
(but, also, VISUM applications are welcome) to any problem that
could be of interest to other participants, please get in touch. We will need
to have a title accompanied by an abstract of 200-300 words by March 4th 2005.
Presenters should then submit their papers and/or handout slides by April 5th
The compliance with these deadlines will enable us to prepare the documentation
to be circulated at the User Group Meeting well in advance (papers and/or
handout slides not received on time might not be part of the proceedings and/or
excluded from the programme). Presentations will last 15-25 minutes, with some
time for questions at the end. Traffic Engineering and Control (TEC)
has offered to host a write-up of the event and, unless otherwise noted,
we assume presenters agree with that.
A social event is organized on the evening of April 21st in

Special requirements such as, for example, ‘vegetarian meal’, ‘allergy to nuts’
or ‘wish to learn how to model road user charging’ should be noted there. We
can fax/email the registration form on request. Upon registration, you’ll
receive a confirmation together with the invoice by e-mail. A fee of £ 160 will
be charged for each of the events (for students/PHDs the fee is £ 80 for the User Group Meeting and £ 100 for the Training). Presenters (1 per paper)
will pay a reduced fee of £ 80 for the User
Group Meeting. VAT is added on top of the registration fee unless a valid
EEC VAT number is provided. The deadline
for the registration is (UPDATE-050414) April 16th. As the demand might
be higher than the capacity of the rooms allocated, in particular for the Training, bookings will be prioritized
according to their earliness.
